Acton’s book changed the way cookery books were written. She was the first to list ingredients separately. She also illustrated her recipes with woodcuts. She was also the first to list accurate cooking times. Acton also included information about the adulteration of bread by bakers. She also included a section on food waste. She also included the first recipes for spaghetti, Brussels sprouts, and Christmas pudding.
Eliza Acton spent time in France. Her cookbooks included a chapter on Jewish cookery. Her work was praised by Jane Grigson in her book English Food (1974). Acton also influenced Delia Smith. She called Acton “the best writer of recipes in the English language.”
